Apart from being a bodily necessity, it is easy to reduce the action of eating to biting, chewing and swallowing, however, and besides being a blessing, eating is one of the most pleasurable and rewarding experiences a human being can have. That's why doing it in an attentive way can make you see this simple task as a means to reconnect even more.
It is very common to eat on autopilot. Do you remember the last time you were in a restaurant? Do you remember what you ate, what you ordered from the person who was caring for you? Remember the taste of the food? If for you that moment has a strong emotional connection surely yes, but it is very common to see in the eagerness of the day, of the few hours to feed your body that can have a work or study day, how much we have forgotten to taste and really understand what we eat.
Let us remember that mindfulness is paying attention to the present, so eating in a conscious way is part of who she is and how she works for our overall well-being. Mindful Eating allows us not only to understand what we eat, it allows us to understand why we do it, how we do it and what feelings go through us while we do it. For example: are you eating in the right place to do it? What are you doing this for? Are you really hungry? Are you enjoying what you're chewing? Are you enjoying it?
To start you can simply take a deep breath before starting your dinner or breakfast or lunch, take a break -the one that is so missing between the tasks of the day- before starting to eat. Also listen to your body, and by this I mean to know how hungry you really are, forget about the time or how long you have been without eating, this allows you to better choose what you are going to eat. Finally eat in a state of relaxation, it is not only good for your digestion, it allows you to taste more what you are processing in your mouth and with this you can recognize which flavors you enjoy the most.
"Food not only feeds
my body, but also
feeds my soul, my consciousness
and my spirit."
Thich Nhat Hanh
When you have started eating in a more conscious way you will find yourself with a more satisfied stomach, with the satisfaction of having tasted every bite of food, there will be a decrease of those uncomfortable symptoms that come with eating fast, and there will come another series of positive symptoms for your being. In addition to all these benefits, mindful eating will allow you, with the passing of the days of practice, to apply this way of awareness in other areas of your life.
