ABOUT LIFE AND SQUATS

As I mentioned in another entry, Life is about getting up when you fall, about moving forward despite the stumbles, about moving forward. A lot of this is related to bodybuilding, to the process of hypertrophy, to discipline, to diet and rest, until the results come. However the permanence of them are bound to continue moving forward.

I could not say exactly when I decided to go into this issue of bodybuilding, what I have clear is that it was after the day that changed my life, and it was thanks to whom today I consider my best friend, when he said to me in a very subtle way: "what if we go to the gym?". After this question my life took a turn for the better.

Although my purpose in entering the gym was not to become a bodybuilder, the process took me closer and closer to it. When I started it was not easy, I felt confused, I did not know what to do, what not to do and how to do it. So the curves of life begin: we do not know how to face them, how to carry them and, most importantly, how to get out of them. Starting to go is always the first step. Facing the task comes first. In addition to the above, the fact of having a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis on top did not make it easier. However, the challenge gave a very attractive touch to the task.

As time passed I began to learn how to do the exercises well, listening to those who had already been in my position, the rookie position. Being willing to recognize the need to grow is the next step: Learn, model and correct, from the way of doing the exercise, the correct posture, the number of repetitions and ideal sets to meet the goal: volume, strength and/or resistance. From here the next thing was to keep moving forward. More weight, more reps, more sets. Move forward and keep moving forward. To keep learning meant to me to keep growing, to keep gaining more and more strength. It is at this moment that what begins as a hobby is transformed into dedication.

After the first year I realized that muscle hypertrophy would not be easy and would require much more than just going to the gym. I already had more knowledge about exercise, how to do it right, now the rest of the recipe was needed: diet and rest, that is, more discipline. This was the first stumble on my path in bodybuilding, my little knowledge in nutrition, so I had to keep learning: how many grams of protein, carbohydrates and fat I needed to keep seeing results, how many calories and how many hours of rest. The plains in the path of growth are part of the process as well, however it is in your hands whether you keep moving forward-growing - or decide to descend.

Aside from all this, I realized that the greatest learning and the greatest similarity that exists between life and bodybuilding, is that life is like a squat, the best and most complete exercise of all the repertoire available: life is about getting up when you have a weight on you that tries to get on your knees, and do it again and again until you need to increase weight to continue, to challenge, to grow and to strengthen you.
